DALLAS, TX(AP): The North Dallas Forty routed General Crowder and the Harlem Knights today, 10-2, winning the 1933 World Series four games to two. Much jubilation and celebration is expected in the Lone Star State tonight as North Dallas capped off an amazing season with a World Championship.
"It's a long time coming," said Forty helmsman Bill Terry. "Every year we kept getting closer, yet hadn't tasted the sweet joy of victory."
Despite the rout today, the victory was far from easy. The underdog Knights fought valiantly, and were an four outs away from being up 3 games to none on the Forty.
"They are a fantastic team... a great story for the DBS," said Harlem second sacker Buddy Myer, who hit .333 in the Series. "We fought them tooth and nail, but in the end, they were just too much for us."
North Dallas was a combination of dominant pitching and hitting as they wracked up 103 wins in the regular season while running away with the SouthEast division. Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell and Babe Ruth are just a few of the contributors to this team, which has a young core that should remain intact for a few years to come. Harlem was lead this season by four outstanding rookies, and showed maturity far beyond their years.
Crowder (0-1) did not have his best stuff. We gave up two hits in the first, but the Forty failed to score. After retiring Freddie Lindstrom to lead off the second, Luke Appling doubled into the gap, and Werber tripled him home to give North Dallas a 1-0 lead. The floodgates opend in the third for North Dallas, as Charlie Gehringer lead off with a single. Mel Ott walked, and then Ruth, who has been clutch all season, narrowly missed a home run to right as the ball hit about 6 inches below the top of the fence. He had to settle for an RBI double. Terry singled home Ott, and after Lindstrom popped out, Appling knocked in Ruth. Werber then punched a 1-1 pitch into center to score Terry, and North Dallas had a 5-0 lead.
That was more then enough for Hal Schumacher (1-0), as he scattered 9 hits over nine innings, allowing only the two runs in Harlem's 8th inning. North Dallas got some insurance from home runs by Billy Werber and Rick Ferrell.
